The Bontebok is one of South Africa’s greatest conservation success stories. Once reduced to just 17 individuals in 1837, its population has now rebounded to around 10,000 and was officially removed from CITES Appendix II in 2025. It is a striking antelope, endemic to South Africa, known for its reddish-brown coat, white facial blaze, and preference for short grass habitats.
Scientific name: Damaliscus pygargus pygargus
Family: Bovidae (related to tsessebe and blesbok)
Height: 80 to 100 cm at the shoulder
Weight: 50 to 155 kg
Lifespan: 17 to 23 years in the wild
Appearance: Reddish-brown body, white face blaze, rump, and belly
Habitat: Fynbos and Renosterveld in the Western Cape; prefers open grasslands and savanna
Diet: Grazes mainly on short grasses
Predators: Large carnivores such as lions and leopards
Speed: Estimated up to 60 km per hour
Cultural significance: Symbol of South African conservation success, often featured in eco-tourism and wildlife reserves
