It was declared a national park on July 6, 1982, and is one of the oldest in Mexico. The park, encompassing approximately 2,739 hectares, is dominated by forests of fir, pine, and oak trees, mountainous terrain with scenic peaks and valleys, and a rich biodiversity of flora and fauna typical of temperate zones. It is a popular destination for hiking, mountain biking, camping, and rock climbing.
