Conceived and created in ancient Egypt and adapted by Greek physicist, engineer, inventor, astronomer, and mathematician Archimedes of Syracuse (3rd century BC) to raise water, flour, grain, or excavated material to higher altitudes. From its invention to the present day, it has been used for pumping. Also known as an Archimedes screw due to its continuous circuit. It is a screw (a helical surface surrounding a cylinder) inside a tube. The device's rotational movement is achieved by a mill or by manual operation using a crank. Due to the screw's rotation, the underlying liquid rises along the surrounding helical surface. It was mainly used in irrigation systems and to extract water from mines or other inaccessible places. Studies show that the flow rate through Archimedes screws depends on the inlet depth, the screw diameter, and its rotational speed. Historically employ in irrigation systems, among other applications, Archimedes screws extract soil from the sea and pump water from the enclosed area, thus initiating the drainage process for agricultural activities. This ingenious device has endured and continues to be used in wastewater treatment plants, which must manage variable flow rates and suspended solids. They are also employed in grain elevators and snowplows. The same principle is applied in fish farms, where they are used to safely lift and transport fish, thus avoiding physical handling.
